Commanders were Major-General Lloyd and Brigadier Bird. HEIC cavalry regiments involved in the campaign were the Governor-General’s Bodyguard, the 2nd and 11th Bengal Irregular Cavalry, and the Ramgarh Irregular Cavalry. Infantry regiments included some 500 men of the 40th Bengal N.I. sent by steamer from Dinapore, and the 37th and 63rd Bengal N.I., sent together with irregular cavalry to prevent the Santhals marching south. The 7th and 31st Bengal N.I. were placed on the border at Mushidabad, whilst detachments from the 13th, 40th, and 42nd were stationed at Bhagalpur. The style of uniform worn was similar to those covered in the chapters on the Sikh Wars and the Indian Mutiny.
